We assisted a French national in obtaining British citizenship after she had lived in the UK for many years and started a family here. Many French nationals reside in the UK and some have gone on to seek British citizenship. This process, known as naturalisation, allows adults to become British citizens. While straightforward for some, our client faced a more complex situation.
Our client had a high number of absences from the UK, exceeding the normal limit. These absences were due to pregnancy abroad and travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Government has the power to grant British citizenship despite excessive absences.
We worked hard with our client to understand the level of her absences and the reasons for those absences, in the context of the Government’s powers. We guided our client through the application process and documented all aspects of her case. We also prepared a detailed letter to the Government, outlining the relevant laws and policies on absences and highlighting our client’s strong connections to the UK. Our hard work paid off: the Government approved the application and naturalised her as a British citizen.
